Community Update

On Sunday, May 21, 2017 Soorp Khatch Armenian Apostolic Church held a special membership meeting.  The purpose of this meeting was to vote on a proposal to provide a $600,000 loan to the Armenian Youth Center (AYC) to help launch the infrastructure phase of construction for our future home in Darnestown, Maryland.  Our membership voted overwhelming (48 to 10) in support of authorizing a line of credit to the AYC for up to 3 years to help jump start this important endeavor.  Our vote now goes to the Prelacy Executive Council for their review and consideration.

An update (Oct 16 ., 2015)

On behalf of the Armenian Youth Center and the Hamasdegh School PTA we would like to thank all those who came and showed their support and participated in the Community’s Pumpkin Patch Day event and celebrated Armenian Teachers Day with us on October 11, 2015 at the Darnestown Park and the AYC Land in Darnestown MD.

We were so pleased the weather cooperated so that we could enjoy our time together. Children’s with high energy were able to run around the open fields with happy smiles, parents and grandparents glowing faces made it worthwhile to be part of this special day. As the Red, Blue & Orange balloons on our new sign flew in the soft breeze the traditional Armenian music was playing in the background. The families were having picnics with their children, as some were picking pumpkins by walking around the green fields of the AYC’s land.

The community was given a tour by the Armenian Youth Center representatives, showing the14.5 acre property and neighbors adjacent to the land. The AYC’s Vice Chairman Mr. Kevork Tatarian gave a brief history of the land and a synopsis as to where we are today. Kevork also shared the latest news that the AYC has already signed a contract with our civil engineer and is in process of getting an architect on board to begin design of the infrastructure. He introduced all the board members and he shared that the AYC represents the entire Soorp Khatch Community and that we are here to build our future home. Attendees showed enthusiasm and shared their thoughts and opinions on how important it is to build a new community center, a school and church for our future generation.

Supporter suggested organizing frequent future events such as today allowing access to all community members to get the sense of the property. Everyone was in high spirits.

Many thanks to AYC board members who donated their time and endless effort in making this event a successful one, specially to Mr. Garbis Mouradian donating funds for the sign and Mr. & Mrs. Hovsep & Claire Erchenian for donating the pumpkins.
